After a couple of days of meetings and rehearsals in Calgary, the ten of us landed at our first destination, Edmonton. Francis and Gordon Russell, the tour's local coordinators, wrote to us in January asking if there was any way we could visit their youth centre and help them raise funds for its continued operation. It was a logical fit for the Dreamcatcher Tour and the Youth Centre to find themselves partnering together for the benefit of youth.
In the afternoon, Tom and Dave co-facilitated the suicide awareness workshop for 180 youth at the Ben Calf Robe School. Participants included students from St. Alphonsus Jr. High, St. Elizabeth Seton Jr. High, St. Joseph's High School, and St. Francis Xavier High School. Proceedings began with an opening prayer by elder Diana Delorme and at the end of the workshop; the students stayed for autographs, entered a draw to win concert tickets, and enjoyed light refreshments in the school library. Organizers presented Tom and Dave with gifts and souvenirs of their visit to the school, along with a big bag of bannock and jam to enjoy the next morning on the plane!
While the workshop took place, our crew and band were setting up at the youth centre. An enthusiastic 175 people came out to the show and with all of them staying for autographs at the end, we declared the evening a success. It was early to bed for us as our departure to Fredericton the next morning was 5 a.m.
Special thanks to Marilyn, Sharon, Pam, Francis and Gordon
